We Truly want to hear from everyone, everybody has a way or an idea to add. I promise you that. I’ll share my opinion first. My name is David I’m the founder here at Love Share foundation. This is what I got… Our California Judicial system hands down life sentences to young men — still kids at 18, 19, 20 — like they’re handing out junk mail. I’ve been present. I’ve witnessed it for years. In a single court date, I watched three youngsters from LA get broke off: one got 25-to-life, another 32-to-life, and the third 52-to-life. Like it was nothing. Kids raised in gang families who never stood a chance at success.
Don’t get me wrong — I understand there are victims in these cases. I’ve seen their families crying in the audience too. And I promise you this: after they grieve the loss of their own, they want nothing more than for that young man to rehabilitate himself. Especially if he’s sincere.
I know there’s something better: give that young man ten years, a bachelor’s degree, a church, and something positive to live for — and let him earn his way home.
California already proves it works. Incarcerated students who earn bachelor’s degrees have a 0% return-to-prison rate. Education plus accountability equals a second chance. That’s not soft. That’s smart. That’s real rehabilitation.
I challenge California’s governors — past, present, and future — to make these decisions with human compassion and rehabilitation in mind, as if their own grandson or nephew were standing on that stand, being sentenced that day.
